Lost Football Grounds

Newcastle NSW

Football in the Newcastle and Hunter region began in the middle of the 1880s when clubs such as Lambton Thistle(1885), Minmi Rangers(1886) and Hamilton Athletic(1886) played on their local paddocks. These three clubs have since folded but were replaced by other clubs such as Wallsend (1887), Adamstown (1889) and West Wallsend (1891) which still play today.  Some clubs began playing on grounds different to where they play today and some grounds have been lost to the game. Some grounds are still in use as football grounds, such as Austral Park which is now called The Gardens. Some grounds, such as Wallsend's Crystal Palace ground at Wallsend are one of the icons of the game in Newcastle.
