Dean's Pottery Ground Mayfield

Mayfield United Football Club began in 1921 as Lysaght's United. The club formation was closely linked to the opening of Lysaght's at Mayfield. Lysagth's were involved with galvanized iron manufacture. The industry attracted many Immigrants from the U. K. to the extent that a part of Mayfield near the present Mayfield Park was called "Pommy Town".

Lysagth's first ground was near Dean's Pottery works, Mayfield. (The Newcastle Sun,  6 May 1921, Page 2) The location oh Dean's Pottery is shown on the map below. However, this part of Mayfield looked vastly different to how it looks today. The BHP filled in Platt's Channel to make way for an extension of the steelworks. The ground was probably somewhere between Tourle and Bull Streets.
