Broadmeadow Rovers

On  Monday night, 6 May, 1895 a meeting was held at the Premier Hotel, Broadmeadow which formed the Broadmeadow Rovers Football Club. The club's colours would be red and white. (Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate, 7 May 1895, page 4) The Broadmeadow Rover's ground was adjacent to the Premier Hotel. The proprietor of the Premier Hotel, Mr T. Williams, covered the costs of clearing the land. The players then worked on improving the  ground. The ground was still rough when Broadmeadow played Adamstown in a friendly game on Saturday afternoon, 18 May.(Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate, 20 May 1895, page 3) This would put the ground on the A. A. Company land just to the east of the Premier Hotel.

This Parish Map of Newcastle (1918) shows the A. A. Company land and the Premier Hotel, circled red. The Broadmeadow Rovers' ground would be on the A. A. land next to the hotel.

The red rectangle is the probable location of Broadmeadow Rovers' home ground next to the Premier Hotel

The Premier Hotel, Broadmeadow, NSW, 18 March 1892 from the Ralph Snowball Collection, The University of Newcastle. The Broadmeadow ground would have been somewhere on the left of the picture.
